Synchronised Neurons for Focus:
When we pay attention to something specific, neurons in the visual cortex fire in synchrony, while those responding to irrelevant information become suppressed. It’s like turning up the volume on relevant neurons and muting the noise.
So we need to ensure that we are paying attention to what is going to enhance us not detract from us.
Focus and Attention is a mechanism that is improved by good practice.
Create a “Focus Bubble”:
Curate a distraction-free environment for productive focus:
Ideally put all devices away but if that is a step too far initially turn off notifications on your devices.
Complete urgent tasks before you need to focus.
Gather everything you need within arm’s reach.
Use noise-cancelling headphones with non-melodic music or white noise.
Let others know not to disturb you during focus sessions.
The environment is everything - create an environment that supports your need to focus and pay attention.
To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work
