Passion isn’t just a poetic concept—it has a neural basis.
Reward Circuit Activation:
When we’re passionate about something—whether it’s a hobby, career, or relationship—our brain’s reward circuit lights up.
This circuit involves regions like the caudate nucleus (associated with reward detection) and the ventral tegmental area (linked to pleasure and motivation).
Chemical Influence:
Passion floods our brain with chemicals like dopamine, creating physical and emotional responses—racing hearts, sweaty palms, and euphoria.
Following your passion isn’t just philosophical; it’s a chemical boost for happiness and resilience.
So, embrace your passions—they’re wired into your brain!
On a personal note, once upon a time, when I was part of a senior leaders assessment process, I was told that my passion was intimidating. At that time I was advocating for the most vulnerable people in society and working within the public sector sphere. I was ‘advised’ that in order to preserve my sense of self and identity that it may be wise to exit this career path.
I listened and I did.
However, what kind of world is it when passion to make it better is seen as something detrimental?

What activities make you lose track of time? Pursue them.

How does neurogenesis impact cognitive health? Consider brain cell regeneration.
One person with passion is better than forty people merely interested.
Hi Dr Rach- It's been a while since I've been engaged but once again, realise I need time to spend on myself. I found this article interesting about passion. In the past I feel the word has been used so much especially at work where someone will say, I am so passionate about the xx process or project. When we know that they are trying to get noticed and promoted. I think if you are truly passionate about something it shines through maybe even to the extent that it is intimidating!! And yes, how sad is it to be intimidated by someone who wants to make things better. I do hope you are well. And please be encouraged to keep on doing what you are doing. I must look out for you on podcast :)
