Being able to start tasks is part of the domain of executive function.
Now some tasks are not that interesting to us. Some are downright boring for us. However the power of task initiation is huge in our motivation and reward mechanism.
In this age of ‘me, I deserve, indulgence as a distraction technique and overwhelm’ it is really important to understand how we start things.
There is an internal or external drive to get something done. We may have a need or we may need to do something because someone else needs us to do so.
This is motivation.
The reward is us actually doing the action to meet the motivation.
So, it is really important that we have an interest whether that is a self-invested or an interest in others to get it done.
What I would like you to do today is to give yourself permission to get rid of anything that either does not have self interest or a vested interest in others as a motivational drive.
Start to be discerning about what you are interested in.
It is ok to say no to things that will not serve a purpose in your motivation and reward network.
This is not being selfish.
This is discerning where we expend energy and also ensuring we have enough for things that matter to us.
Really think about things you do that you do not know why you do it or what purpose it serves.
By freeing up energy for things that matter, we start to become better at task initiation as we are motivated to get the reward.
I especially love this one!
“The government was to raise the duty on cheese to 83 percent, an unpopular move that would doubtless have the more militant citizens picketing cheese shops.”
