Very timely post, only this week I was looking into how much tax is generated and from where and what is it being spent on, so saw the overall figure spent on healthcare, firstly thinking where is the money going given what is/isnt being provided at the moment, but given all that money, why are people so sick?
It is interesting how much your findings attribute to stress and lifestyle choices yet we dont really talk about it or better still take action towards it. And how this week with Mental Health Awareness week, are people consciously prepared to make changes that would be necessary to promote and be well on a daily basis, to reduce the stressors, to be more educated and to take responsibility for their actions and lifestyle. Or do we take a moment to meditate that week, go for a walk one day and chat to our colleagues, then go back to how things were?
This is a factual post and different to the current narrative. Thank you.
It is so frustrating to me that how we live and how we are encouraged to be unwell by the environment which is all around us is not talked about more. If I see/hear any more bullshit pieces on how to “biohack” your way out of stress then I will publicly point out the sheer madness of it. The problem is that to the economy wellness in it’s essential form can mainly be done for free and is reliant on the individual wanting to be well being able to make decisions and speak up about what is well for them. Wellness tools/supplements/gimmick/quantum quackery whatever is being sold is not the magic pill. Ever. The magic pill is the individual being able to take action for their wellness by making small steps by choosing what is currently making them unwell and working on that. I hear you about mental health awareness week. For example let’s take anxiety. How often is that described as a “disorder “? It’s an evolutionary benefit that we have (amongst other mammals) to give us warning signs that the environment may not be safe or that we may about to experience loss of something important to us. Yet people with anxiety are medicalised and stigmatised, given a label and often medication rather than sat with to go through how they can feel safer, secure and supported! Honestly it’s just madness, all of it!
Just to add to the "anxiety" madness, I had a conversation this week about a teen experiencing anxiety which has been happening for the last few years i.e. since the pandemic and they now have exams. It was talked about almost in the context of lots of teens are having this. I know exams can be be stressful. However, do we also need to be pointing out, mass anxiety amongst teens is not normal and with or without medication, what needs to be done to say this isnt OK and isnt normal. Otherwise what are we supporting and creating for the future in our younger generation and are we normalising anxiety and mental health too much? Hope this makes sense?
Perfect sense.. you will see in my short comment on sats my thoughts on children and anxiety .. it’s not ok to not be ok and we have to stop medicalising children!
Thank you so much.. that means a lot … I don’t want to be doom and gloom but how the majority are being influenced into unwellness is really unsettling me ❤️
It definitely doesn’t seem doom and gloom to me as we all have choice over our actions... it’s interesting to see what impact these choices have over the long term and get us to think differently about how we do small things on a daily basis
