Time management is an important executive function that involves understanding and effectively using time to complete tasks and meet deadlines. It is among the many executive functioning skills that contribute to productivity and success in life.
Something that is really important to know is that the brain cannot multi-task so you cannot do things simultaneously. What is actually happening is that the brain is switching between one task to another. This actually uses far too much energy.
So what we are going to do today is just focus on one task completely then have a pause before starting the next.
You will probably find this really difficult, especially if you have gotten into the habit of allowing yourself to be distracted.
So what I would do is choose relatively short tasks, or set a timer to dedicate yourself to one task for ten minutes as you really need to focus on this one thing to train your executive function.
When you have done it I want to recognise you have finished that particular task by saying to yourself I can feel my feet on the ground, whilst taking ten deep breaths.
This is your pause so that you are marking the moment before you start the next thing.
By doing this we are helping the brain to differentiate between tasks and not burn too much fuel by switching constantly between one task and another.
Help yourself by removing all forms of distraction, start with short moments of time and over time build up to longer periods.
This is a game changer, plus it is also really telling if you find it difficult to do at how your executive functioning may need a little more time to manage the time.
“Where your attention goes, your time goes”
Thanks for the reminder- I did do this before after one of your previous emails and found it really helpful.
Thank you for sharing these simple tasks. This one is much needed for me at the moment. Didnt know about the pause.
And defo the phone needs to be out of the room
